How we rank tool stacks
The Stack Finder uses the same fixed rules for every stack. Here they are, in order.
1. Filters
- Task: the stack must be built for the task you picked, as its main task or a secondary one.
- Level: the stack must list your level (beginner, intermediate, or developer).
- Budget: the stack's verified monthly total in US dollars must be within your budget (Free, Up to $20, Up to $50, $100+). Monthly prices are used, not annual-billing prices. Prices in other currencies are shown as listed by the vendor, and converted to US dollars for this check at the European Central Bank reference rate (shown with "≈" and the rate date).
2. Order
- Fit: stacks built mainly for your task always come before stacks where it is only a secondary task, regardless of price.
- Verified prices: stacks whose prices are all confirmed come before stacks with a price we couldn't confirm, or a currency conversion whose exchange rate is more than 60 days old. Those stacks are labeled "Budget fit not verified."
- Cost: within the same group, the lower monthly total (in US dollars) comes first.
- Name: if everything else is equal, alphabetical order.
The Finder shows up to 5 stacks. If fewer stacks match, it shows fewer.
What we never use
- Affiliate links. Whether a tool has an affiliate program, or pays a commission, is not part of the ranking. The site's build checks this: if removing affiliate information would change any stack's ranking data, the site fails to build.
- Guesses. Unconfirmed prices are shown as "Not verified", never estimated.
Where the information comes from
Prices come from each vendor's official pricing page, with the date they were checked. Every reason a stack gives for using its tools together links to an official source. Stacks marked "Not hands-on tested" have not been used in practice by the author; tested stacks say how they were used.
